³§³æé±ô³Ù²õ and ²Ïá³¾ (Feathers and Ripples): A Student-Led Initiative at Jackson Elementary

June 9, 2025

At Jackson Elementary, students are leading a powerful initiative called ³§³æé±ô³Ù²õ and ²Ïá³¾, which means Feathers and Ripples. Rooted in Indigenous values, the program empowers students to foster connection and kindness through peer support during recess and lunch.

The idea emerged when Ms. Barkess noticed that some students were navigating emotional or social challenges during unstructured time. While adult supervisors were available, students expressed that it sometimes felt easier to talk to a peer. Rather than implement a solution for them, Ms. Barkess invited students to help co-create the response.

Rooted in Indigenous Teachings and Language

With guidance from Indigenous Support Worker Jessi Old Coyote, students chose the name ³§³æé±ô³Ù²õ and ²Ïá³¾. ³§³æé±ô³Ù²õ represents feathers - a symbol of gentleness and strength; while ²Ïá³¾ signifies the ripples that acts of kindness create in a community.

As part of the initiative, students colour and share feather visuals throughout the school to serve as reminders that kindness, no matter how small, can ripple outward to make a big impact.

Student Leadership in Action

Wearing bright pinnies, generously supported by PAC member Ms. MacDonald, ³§³æé±ô³Ù²õ and ²Ïá³¾ student leaders are easily identified on the playground. They offer a friendly face to classmates who might be feeling left out, upset, or just in need of connection.

This student-driven model supports emotional well-being, encourages inclusion, and builds leadership skills, helping everyone feel more prepared to return to class focused and ready to learn.

Small Acts, Big Impact

³§³æé±ô³Ù²õ and ²Ïá³¾ is more than a peer support program. It’s a reflection of student voice, Indigenous education, and community care at Jackson Elementary. Students are learning that even gentle acts can create meaningful ripples.

And sometimes, all it takes is a feather, and a friend.
